About School

ARTSIDE is a private higher education institution founded by Digital Art professionals, with a strong desire to offer innovative training that meets the expectations of International studios.

More of 70 teachers come from the largest international studios and share this desire to train future talents. They offer with Artside a professional education and share their workflow and tools used in production and offer our students a complete professional network. Our students develop an in-depth understanding of 3D production/Concept Art pipelines and a mastery of technical and artistic applications.

Our program is based on 3 specializations in order to train in the trades of Concept Art, 3D Character Art and 3D Environment Art for video games and extends over a 4-year Bachelor through comprehensive programs covering all production issues from current studios.

A 14-month online training is also possible for those who already have artistic and technical fundamentals depending on the desired specialization.

Facilities

The Campus program is a Bachelor in 4 years based in Bordeaux (France). The School is located in the Bastide district, 1 minute from the new Ubisoft Campus and close to the Botanical Garden. The Campus offers several digital rooms, 1 study room, a library, a refectory and a traditional room of more than 90m2.

Artside provides its students with all the equipment required to study, with a server, computers dedicated to digital art, graphic tablets and all the software used in production.

Modeling clay, tools and bases are provided by the school. Our traditional rooms offer a set of material for the lessons such as busts, figurines, skeletons, small turntable with lighting, etc.

A streaming platform is available for students with a recording of live videos that remain accessible throughout the training period.

The School is Qualiopi accredited for our teaching.

Staff

The Artside team and all the mentors are connected to the professional world and form an unparalleled network to train and support students to find work in France and abroad. It’s necessary for Artside that all our mentors are in a production in the year in which they teach. Each year, educational monitoring is organized with all the mentors and the Artside team to adapt the lessons according to changes in workflow or artistic direction used in production. We are part of So Games, the video game association in Nouvelle Aquitaine in order to maintain a close connection with all the region's studios.

Courses

From the first year, our students are trained by industry mentors to combine all the goals from a preparatory year to a higher year. This year focuses on understanding artistic fundamentals through traditional and digital tools.

During this year, students are encouraged to develop their artistic sense and their analytical skills. They will also take English and software introductory courses. Much more than a preparatory year, this first year is based on an innovative and professionalizing pedagogy.

At the end of the first year and thanks to our knowledge of production, the students will have acquired all the academic fundamentals of a preparatory year but also the artistic and technical skills of a first year.

The 2nd year validates all the foundations necessary for all artists before progressing to a year of higher specialization. Students will quickly improve their skills in digital tools while consolidating their understanding of volume and anatomy during traditional modeling lessons.

It is during the 3rd year that students integrate one of our three specializations. This year is dedicated to deepening the techniques and software of Concept art, 3D Character Art or 3D Art Environment.

The 4th year is divided into 2 blocks. The first is to create a quality Artbook intended to apply in the targeted studios taking into account the skills and wishes of each.
The second blocks will be the realization of a group project with the IAD school in Montpellier on the creation of a playable video game prototype.

The specializations will all have a different role to play: Concept artists must create a real complete graphic bible which will then be used by 3D artists for the realization of their game prototype. Students in character art specialization will create the characters, monsters, weapons and animations taking into account optimization constraints. And those specialized in environment Art will be responsible for creating an entire playable setting with some technical and optimization constraints to consider.

FIRST YEAR CAMPUS

Introduction to Photoshop, Zbrush and Blender tools. Acquire the basics of Academic fundamentals, such as: anatomy, perspective and the sense of volume and light, composition. Know how to analyze a picture.

SECOND YEAR CAMPUS

Know how to use Photoshop, Zbrush and Blender tools. Acquire the Academic fundamentals, such as: anatomy, perspective and the sense of volume and light, composition. Acquire the basics in baking, UVs and creation of PBR textures. Acquire the basics in integration, lighting and Shading under Unreal Engine. Master the basics in anatomy and HD sculpting.

THIRD AND FOURTH YEAR CAMPUS, SPECIALIZATION CONCEPT ART

Know the constraints related to video game studios. Know how to use the Photoshop tool at a professional level. Know the essentials of 2D such as anatomy, perspective and the sense of volume. Acquire the rules of character and environment design. Mastering colorization methodologies. Know how to analyze and work on various artistic directions. Answer to requests from a typical customer

The 4th year is divided into 2 blocks. The first is to create a quality Artbook intended to apply in the targeted studios taking into account the skills and wishes of each. The second blocks will be the realization of a group project with the IAD school in Montpellier on the creation of a playable video game prototype. Students must create a real complete graphic bible which will then be used by 3D artists for the realization of their game prototype.

Understand retopology and its animation constraints. Know how to analyze and work on various artistic directions. Master baking, UVs and creation of PBR textures. The 4th year is divided into 2 blocks. The first is to create a quality Artbook intended to apply in the targeted studios taking into account the skills and wishes of each. The second blocks will be the realization of a group project with the IAD school in Montpellier on the creation of a playable video game prototype. Students in character art specialization will create the characters, monsters, weapons and animations taking into account optimization constraints.

ONLINE, SPECIALIZATION CONCEPT ART / CHARACTER ART 3D / ENVIRONMENT ART 3D

All Online lessons take place remotely and it is necessary for Artside to offer a quality follow up tool. This allows teaching with student support worthy of a face-to-face structure. We have developed our video platform with all the essential educational tools!

CONCEPT ARTIST

Concept-art specialization focuses on the GAME ART aspect of the job and brings together all the issues related to it. This specialization allows students to improve their skills on the key points of the Concept Artist profession. Characters, environments, vehicles and equipment are all elements that will be required of the concept artist in order to give substance to a project. It is therefore important to explore and know the different form languages, the different approaches in order to best prepare for the real expectations of a production. This training aims to improve the student so that he is able to respond to the positions of Concept Artist, Illustrator, Key Artist, Lead Artist, Art Director.


CHARACTER ARTIST

Character Artist specialization will allow students to unleash their creativity and master all the software and techniques required. The work of Character Artist 3D requires many skills and a perfect mastery of the different tools needed in production since a wide range of requirements and constraints exist between AAA, mobile and freelance projects. This training aims to improve the student so that he is able to respond to the positions of Character Artist, Figurine Artist, Lead Character Artist, Textures Artist.

ENVIRONMENT ARTIST

In the Environment Artist specialization, our students must enrich their sets by designing their assets and respecting an artistic direction. They also learn notions of optimization, simple programming and Level-Art to help their team and be autonomous in production. An environment artist is a person capable of creating entire worlds. While having significant technical skills and an excellent command of software, it is necessary to have a developed artistic sense. This training aims to improve the student so that he is able to respond to the positions of Environment Artist, Light Artist, FX Artist, Props Artist, Level Artist, Lead Environment Artist.
