As a think tank training program, Virtual Production Dojo aims to fill the void between tradition storytelling and emerging technologies by offering hands-on training in Virtual Production, Animation, Filmmaking and Gamification.

The program would be a testbed program and the first of its kind training in emerging technologies in New Zealand as a knowledge-sharing framework where those with creative skills and technical programming knowledge can work on a prototype sprint with their cohort.

The curated educational programs aim to provide participants with exposure to new and emerging technologies, enabling specialist solution providers prepared for the developing creative industries.

The program aims to add resilience and confidence in the next generation of graduates and those with industry experience; ready for a career change, bringing a more resilient and curious talent pool into the market prepared for the coming age of virtual production, animation, gamification, and mixed entertaining experiences by building Virtual Production Capabilities and talent pool and engaging Ethnic & Indigenous Communities to provide better economic growth opportunities.

Jeasy is an Emerging Technology evangelist in Film, Motion Capture, AR/VR/MR, Animation, Game Development. Multi-Talented Creative, New Zealand’s first Reallusion Certified Trainer for Character Creator and iClone. Virtual production Dojo is also New Zealand’s first Reallusion Certified Training Centre. Our team are encouraged to remain relevant and competitive in the entertainment industry through regular professional developments, relevant training from industry partners and academic alliances. The specialist team are well experienced in program and framework development and offering hands-on, practice led training programs to ensure proper mentoring and topic delivery is maintained. Virtual Production Dojo aims to empower and offer opportunities to those who, either through personal growth or being dispersed due to Covid-19, want to pursue their passion in the creative industries like the screen sector, independent filmmaking, game design, animation, augmented reality, virtual reality and more. The program looks at removing the barrier of entry to learning and knowledge sharing by enabling the participants to have a sound understanding and methodologies of the processes enabling them to further research and explore their capabilities post the program.

We understand the pressures of upskilling and training while working around a busy schedule, Virtual Production Dojo’s online practice led learning model allows students to have focused study schedules.

We have identified a significant gap in the industry when concerned with “Virtual Production Capabilities. Most training institutes and programs only focus on using game engine technologies for teaching game development. In contrast, the film and media industry only focus on the traditional Camera, Scriptwriting, Lights, Acting and Art Departments, which has created a void for the emerging field of Virtual production and the talent who understands the complexities of bridging the gap between traditional storytelling mediums and gamification.

Virtual Production Dojo aims to fill this void by offering hands-on training in Virtual Production and Gamification. The curated educational programs, along with free access to Unreal Engine, Complete 3D Design and Animation Bundle from Reallusion, aim to provide participants with exposure to new and emerging technologies, enabling specialist solution providers prepared for the developing creative industries.

The program aims to add resilience and confidence to industry professional wanting to upskill as well as the next generation of graduates, bringing a more resilient and curious talent pool into the market prepared for the coming age of virtual production, animation, gamification, and mixed entertaining experiences.

Certificate in Virtual production Methodologies

The Virtual Production Dojo Think Tank program would run as fifteen people intakes over a 12-week program, exposed to the learning pathways and emerging technologies of real-time graphics, machine learning, and interactive tools inside Unreal Engine by Epic Games. Through the program, participants learn the following:

  • Developing pipelines for creating digital humans
  • Motion capture for animation
  • Cinematic principles for Virtual Production
  • Virtual cinematics within the game engine
  • Mentoring and Advice
  • Milestones

Introduction to New Technologies (2 weeks)

The program will introduce Unreal Engine, Unreal Engine Learning resources, Reallusion: Character Creator, IClone, KitBashing and more to understand and expedite the creation process for virtual productions. They will also be introduced to principles of scriptwriting, film editing using Blackmagic Resolve, and hearing from industry professionals and educators in the field of virtual productions.

Ideation and Prototyping of the Virtual Production Project (Agile & Design Thinking) (2 Weeks)

The participants will learn and understand Design Thinking principles and Agile methodologies towards sprint-based workflow while ideating and prototyping individual and collaborative projects.

Developing Virtual Production Project: Application of Introduced Technologies (5 weeks)

Participants will apply the techniques to their projects, starting from collaboration with team members, story ideation, scriptwriting, storyboarding, asset preparation and identification, project creation, virtual environment development, character establishment, animation retargeting and implementation, camera work, working with sequencer and more.

Finalising Virtual Production Project: Short Film Rendered - 3minute maximum (3 weeks)

Participants combine everything they have explored and learned to develop and render out their short film via Unreal Engine Movie Renderer in this phase.
Once rendered, the film will be transferred into Black Magic Resolve for post-production and editing, sound design and mixing and final delivery showcase.
Through the 12 week intensive program, the participants learn the pre-production, production and post-production industry workflows via applied research and learning to produce a short film deliverable. Each cohort member will be provided with ready to use assets, including animation ready digital human, environment asset, unreal engine starter pack that they will utilise in their creation.
