Rookie All Stars - Isaac Zuren, Morgane Herbstmeyer & Valentin Erbuke

The ultimate goal for all members at The Rookies is to launch their careers in creative media and entertainment. We thought it would be a good idea to start sharing some lesser known stories from our alumni that are living the dream.

Isaac Zuren

Generalist @ Industrial Light & Magic

What professional projects have you worked on?

Sonic, The Call of the Wild, The Stand.

What advice would you give young artists starting their journey?

A general issue I see all the time is that graduates stop working on personal projects as soon as they get their diplomas. You should never stop doing what you enjoy and love, no matter how busy you are. Finding time to do your own personal work is important. All that hard work you put into all those small projects will reflect in your dedication and talent, and the quality of your work will be higher. Studios value this way more than someone who hasn’t done anything after.

Why would you recommend young artists join The Rookies?

It will showcase your work to the whole industry!

Morgane Herbstmeyer

Digital Matte Painter @ One of Us

What professional projects have you worked on?

The Witcher and Bridgerton.

What advice would you give young artists starting their journey?

I think my most important advice would be to listen to yourself. In an industry where we are constantly pushing our limits, it's important to take a step back and make sure to listen to yourself. Treating yourself in a positive way has a strong impact on work and contributes to healthy and rapid progress. Every exercise, every idea, every research is a success and brings you closer to your goal. Whether it's once a week or every day, there are no rules and the most important thing is to find a routine that works for you and respects your needs.

Why would you recommend young artists join The Rookies?

I think the Rookies allow us to be part of a healthy community in which to grow up, find people who are like us and receive feedback on our work. Competition is a way to gain visibility, challenge yourself, stay productive and push your limits outside your comfort zone. It will give you an honest feedback on your work to understand where you are on your way to progress the following year.

Valentin Erbuke

Character Artist @ Insomniac Games

What professional projects have you worked on?

I have been one of the principal character artists involved in the Apex Legends Cinematics from Season 1 to Season 8, but I've also shipped the trailers for Destiny 2 Beyond Lights, League of Legends Infernal Soul - LCS Summer, worked on SuperBowl ads and many more.

What advice would you give young artists starting their journey?

Be dedicated and willing to step in and help. People will remember you so put on your best face at work. You can learn from everyone and most people will be happy to teach you when they have the time. Consistent small steps is the way to go. And hone up your craft outside of work. Have fun doing what you do.

Why would you recommend young artists join The Rookies?

There are so many benefits in participating in the Rookies as early as you can in your career. A lot of people in the industry pay attention to what is going on there and students tend to share their work/grades after it's all over. I still remember some portfolios I saw when I helped as a Lead Judge. As an international individual looking to work in the United States, the status and reputation of the Rookies can be used as a leverage to apply for a work Visa.
