Whether you’re already at school, looking to find a new school or even considering moving overseas to study, nothing beats hearing from the students themselves! We speak to Keith Lim about the ins and outs of studying at MAGES Institute of Excellence.

MAGES Institute of Excellence
We offer students live industry projects, lecturers with years of experience, a low student to teacher ratio and a campus located in the heart of Orchard Road

The Specifics

What’s the name of your school?

MAGES Institute of Excellence, located in the heart of Singapore. Our school is in the youth centric building- Scape.

What’s the name of the neighbourhood?

The School is located at Orchard, the central area of Singapore.

Closest train station or public transport option?

A mere 5 minutes from Somerset MRT station and nicely connected throughout the city via buses. Our campus is extremely accessible for commuting between other parts of Singapore. Orchard is a shopping hub, and options for food, shopping, entertainment and what not is just a few steps away.

How long have you been there?

I have been here since March 2020. So just a little more than a year.

Why did you choose to study here?

Since my teen years, I have noticed I have had a liking or interest in VFX, Gaming, Cinematography, etc. I have always found myself in awe looking at other people's artwork and the quality of whatever they create amazes me. I was curious about how such artworks were made and wanted to find out more. When I googled the colleges and institutes, MAGES popped up right on the top. Seeing the ex-students' work and their Social Media posting, I had no second thoughts in joining the school.

The Scene

The first thing you see when you walk outside your school?

Shopping and food and then more shopping. You will walk through malls after malls and still not get bored of it. A youth centre And Oh! There is a skatepark too!

The closest shop to outside your school is:

Right outside is a dance area- Lots of talented dancers’ practice in this area. Then there is a Subway restaurant, Coffee beans, Italian Restaurant, Mc Donalds, Starbucks and a chill area for us.

Your school is great, but you would not mind a bit less:

My school is great! I wouldn’t mind a bit of more time to complete my projects.

The unofficial uniform of your school is:

No official uniforms. Unofficially, each one of us needs to carry an extra layer for the extra cold temperature within the premises.

A mandatory stop for anyone new to your city:

So many places to visit - Sentosa Island, Botanical Gardens, Singapore Flyer to get the aerial city view, but the must see is Gardens by the Bay. It’s amazing! It is most beautiful in the evening when all the trees are beautifully illuminated.

A common myth about your school is:

None.

A massive night out for students at your school is likely to be:

Some drinks at Clarke Quay. A Great place next to the river where you can hang out with drinks, have amazing food, ice cream, and nightclubs.

The Superlatives

You won’t find a better place to eat than at:

At home! Home cooked meals are the best in my opinion.

The strangest thing you’ve ever seen at your school is:

At school we expect everyone (people working here) to be strict and serious almost all the time. But not at MAGES, even the higher management is so friendly. It's not strange, it's just a bit different.

One thing you’d never change about your school is:

The amazing lecturers and the conducive environment. Lecturers here are really knowledgeable and ready to guide even in the mid night. Their guidance throughout the course gives us motivation to complete our overwhelming task. The administration is very helpful too. What can I say about my batchmates - I have made friends for life.

But one thing you wouldn’t mind seeing changed is:

The timing of the classes/lectures during the day or night.

Someone gives you $1M to pimp out your school. You use it to:

Our equipment is latest however, spending a little more on top -of-the-line hardware that will last for many years to come.

Keith enjoys photography, browsing the internet, reading up random facts about anything, and last but not least, playing games! He also loves movies, visual storytelling, and various genres of music. You can find more of his work on Instagram and LinkedIn.
