VanArts was founded in 1995 with Academy-Award winning animator/director Lee Mishkin as its founding program director. Recognizing the industry’s need for a skilled and specialized workforce, for 25 years VanArts has offered a variety of highly focused diploma programs designed to prepare students for work in specific areas of the media arts including Visual Effects Production, Game Art & Design, Character Animation, Professional Photography, Acting for Film & Television, Web Development and Broadcasting.

By developing a well-rounded curriculum of visual, media and performing arts, VanArts has created an educational environment that encourages collaboration between its programs of study. With a faculty and advisory board that draws directly from the relevant industries, VanArts provides its students with the foundation and mentorship necessary to launch a career. Many VanArts graduates are now successful, creative professionals with credits on major feature films, directorial positions, and successful freelance careers around the world.

All of our Department Heads and instructors at VanArts are top industry professionals with decades of experience. They are here because of their passion for teaching and desire to help you become a creative professional they can proudly work alongside.

Nearly half of our student body are international students from all over the world, which expands your network in an increasingly global industry. If you wish to continue your studies after graduating from VanArts, degree pathways are available through our university partners in Canada, United States, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Facilities

We are located at 333 Terminal Avenue in Vancouver, Canada. In Spring 2022 we are moving into newly designed facilities at the same building. All of our programs will be located on one floor in 22 rooms. Our neighbors include Blizzard Activision, CoSA VFX, Electronic Arts, Blackbird Interactive and iUGO Mobile. In our new facilities will be a state of the art theatre.

Staff

Our instructors come from their respective field of industry. They might be presently working for studios. Heads of department are expected to keep their education level current with new developments and advancements. Masterclasses were conducted to provide additional education from leaders in animation, visual effects and game development.

We have 26 years of experience producing thousands of grads working across the world. Our school has been consistently ranked in the top ten of all international animation schools by Animation Career Review magazine. Most recently, VanArts was ranked #2 overall for the 2021 year.

2D/3D Character Animation

For over 25 years VanArts has been a top tier animation school, most recently ranked #2 in Canada by Animation Career Review for its' 2021 rankings. Our highly experienced faculty members are passionate about teaching the craft of character animation. Learn how to animate believable character performances with Maya for 3D or Harmony and hand drawn classical animation for the 2D program.

Game Art & Design

Learn the personal and team skills desired by the world's top gaming developers. You'll learn from instructors with deep experience in gaming, and they will push you to hone your skills and creativity. Make a fully realized working game level and gain incredibly valuable experience.

Visual Effects for Film & TV

Learn how to make visual effects for movies, television and web series in VanArts' HOUDINI-Certified one-year intensive program, and receive a FREE commercial license of Houdini valued at $2,000 from SideFX Software after graduating. Our instructors have worked on many of the industry's biggest productions and will mentor you all of the way through the program.
